Below you will find our weekly teaching and learning summary to find out how we develop and enrich your child's teaching and learning whilst they are with us.

Week ending What we have been learning about
26/04/24 This week in Doves, we have had a fantastic week! Within our writing lessons, we have looked into how Wangari Maathai gave advice to someone in order to change their lives. Through learning to write paragraphs around a theme, we have written letters of advice to give to the poor women about how they can use the seeds to grow a tree. I was blown away by the use of adverbials and conjunctions used in their writing in order to uplevel it! Within our lesson this week, we have been exploring colour and specifically warm and cool colours. We were able to confidently talk about different artists using key vocabulary and describe it using warm/cool colours. Next week, we will be beginning our Decimal topic and learning all about decimals, applying our prior learning of fractions. This term, Year 4 are having a massive push on their timetables, practise ahead of the MTC test in June. 7 minutes a day on TTRS can make a huge difference so keep practising!
19/04/24 Doves class have had a lovely start to the Summer term. This week in our Maths lessons, we have been tackling Fractions and have been exploring adding two or fractions! The children have all worked so hard and have all had a go at reasoning/problem-solving questions! In Geography, we started our new topic by exploring 'Iceland'. We looked at where Iceland is using a map and exploring its location using key vocabulary. Yesterday, we kick started our PE learning this half-term on 'Athletics' and enjoyed developing our skills on jumping, throwing and running ahead of our sports day in June.
28/03/24 What a fantastic week to end the term on! The children have blown me away with how hard they have worked. WIthin our science lessons, we completed an investigation to see how long chocolate changes. Did you know that solids change state through the process of melting? Within our writing lessons, we have been looking frotned adverbials and learning to indetfy tghese so that we can ensure a commas used. Using this, we wrote a monolgue in role as Ivan's brother. The children worked so hard and should be so very proud of themselves. I hope you all have a restful Eastrer break and i look forward to seeing you in few weeks.
  Year 4 have had a wonderful week and enjoyed the first few days of spring! Within our writing lessons, we have been exploring newsletters and learning to use inverted commas. The children went onto to write their own newsletter report about Ivan's return to the village after finding his brother! Across our maths learning, the children have wowed me with their resilience on using understanding improper fractions and we have been learning to convert these to mixed numbers. On Wednesday, we enjoyed our visit to Addlestone library and discovered how we can all become members. Next week, we are excited for our Roman day when we will be making Roman mosaics and learning all about life as a Roman solider! Have a lovely weekend everyone!
15/03/24 Year 4 have had a lovely week and enjoyed the sunshine making appearance! In our writing lessons, we delved deeper into Ivan's journey to find his brother and made a story map to summarise this. Using our story maps, we then went onto write diary entries in role as Ivan - I was impressed with the use of vocabulary used to show emotion! Next week, we are excited to visit our local library and find out how we can become a member.
08/03/24 What a lovely week Year 4 have had! This week, we have delved into book and enjoyed all the fantastic activities.   Within our writing lessons, we have explored the illustrator Dapo Adeola. We then went onto create our books in the style of one of his books 'Look Up'.  I was so proud of the children's creations and i know the children were very excited to share these with reception this afternoon. Next week, we will be taking part in Science week and using scientific enquiry to develop our understanding of 'States of Matter'.  We will be finding out how chocolate changes state and how long it takes.
01/03/24 Doves have had a lovely week. On Wednesday, Hannah from Paintbox came into school to launch our art project. This was a really exciting day for the children and we can't wait to see the finished product in a few weeks.
In our writing lesson, we delved deeper into our class text, where we focused on why Ivan went to find his brother. As the week went on, we started to write in role as Ivan and wrote a letter to his family about his decision to go and find his brother. Next week, we are excited for World Book Day and all the fun activities Mrs Devonport has planned.
23/02/24 Welcome back everyone! We hope you had a lovely half term. Year 4 have settled beautifully and worked extremely hard this week. In our writing lessons, we have loved exploring our new text 'Ice Palace'. We delved into the setting of 'Ivan's Land'. Wow- I was blown away by the beautiful, winter settings the children wrote about! We started our computing topic of 'Data Logging' where we explored the different types of data that is collected and how this is presented.
09/02/24 Year 4 have had a fabulous week to end the half term. We have thoroughly enjoyed participating in 'Children's Mental Health Week' specifically 'No pens day'. We enjoyed learning in different ways and leaving our books packed away. On Tuesday, we enjoyed taking part in Safer Internet day and make videos about how we can be positive influences online. Next harm, we are excited for our new history topic 'Romans' and building on our knowledge from the ancient Greeks.
02/02/24 Wow, what a super week Doves have had! Yesterday, we had our class assembly, which was huge success. The children blew us all away as they stood up and shared their knowledge about Ancient Greece. Within our writing lesson, we have continued our learning about Ancient Greece and have created a non-chronological report about the ancient Greek gods and goddesses. Next week, we are excited about Children's Mental Health Week and will participate in lots of activities to promote why our voices are important.
26/01/24 Wow what an amazing week Year 4 have had! On Tuesday, we had our Ancient Greek day! The children very much enjoyed the workshop by Chertsey Museum, where they learnt about life in Ancient Greece and explored different artefacts which gave so much new information. In science, we explored our digestive systems and the children worked so hard creating their own non-chronological report on this. Next week, we are excited for our class assembly - we hope to see you all there.
19/01/24 This week Year 4 has had another brilliant week! In our writing lessons, we have continued to focus on the power of our vocabulary and writing for effect. As we continued to focus on the Greek poem' The Minotaur', we explored writing a setting description of Labrynth, which is where the Minotaur lives. I was so impressed with the use of fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases. Well done Year 4! Next week, we are excited about ancient Greek day which is happening on Tuesday 23rd. We have lots of exciting things planned for the children, including a Greek workshop from Chertsey Museum.
12/01/24 Wow, what an amazing week Doves have had! The children have all worked so incredibly hard in every subject this week - I am so proud of them! Within our writing lessons, we have been exploring mythical characters from different Greek poems. We then went onto writing character descriptions using ambitious vocabulary about the different characters! We have started our history learning of ancient Greece and have explored different artefacts to see what information they can tell us about this civilisation. Next week, we will be looking at multiply and dividing by 10 and 100 through fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. Have a great weekend everyone!
05/01/24 Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a relaxing holiday with your familles. Doves have settled in beautifully to 2024. Next week, we are excited to get started with our new history topic 'Ancient Greeks' and find out about why the Greeks were so great ahead of our Greek day later on in the term
15/12/23 This week has been another busy week as we prepare for the Christmas break. The children worked so hard! In writing, we have been writing monologues in the role of Iron Man. Within these monologues, we have been using a range of punctuation. Such as question marks for rhetorical questions. We are looking forward to our Christmas party next week and seeing who wins the house competition!
08/12/23 Doves have worked extremely hard this week, and I am very proud of them! In Science, we worked hard to deepen our understanding of electrical circuits. The children worked together to create a complete circuit using switches, and we learnt about the different types of switches we may find in our homes. In ou writing lessons, we explored alliteration and then created a menu for the ion man using this writing technique. Would you like to eat barbed wired bread? Next week we are excited about our Christmas concert performance. We hope to see you all there!
01/12/23 This week in our writing we have been exploring Chapter 3 of our class text. At the beginning of the week, we were learning to use direct speech to form a conversation between the Iron Man and Hogarth. We made predictions about what the two characters might say to each other. I was blown away with how hard the children were trying to ensure their speech was punctuated correctly. In maths, we have continued to develop our recall of multiplication and working on applying our times table knowledge to our division calculations. Next week, we are looking forward to designing Iron Man his own menu using alliteration.
24/11/23 This week, Doves have worked so incredibly hard and I am so proud of them. In Geography, we have been learning about earthquakes and why these happen. The children then went onto write a diary entry in role as someone who is experiencing an earthquake. Within Maths, we have started our new unit, Multiplication and Division. Everyone has worked so hard on the recall of their 3 and 6 times table. Next week, we are going to be looking at different strategies to learn our 9 times table and learn division calculations for this. Have a lovely weekend everyone!
17/11/23 Doves have had a fabulous week. On Monday we all enjoyed our Science lesson where we were learning to create simple circuits. The children had  great fun using the equipment and learning how electricity travels. I have been blown away by everyone's involvement in Maths this week as we have explored Area for the first time. The children enjoyed finding the area of different shapes and comparing this using our key vocabulary. Next week, we are looking forward to reading further into our PoR text and finding out about what happens to Iron Man.
10/11/23 Doves have had a fabulous week! In Geography, we have continued our learning aroun Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunamis. All the children were activily enagged with this and enjoyed finding how Volcanoes were formed. Within PSHE, we have been looking at assumptions and how they can impact the way people feel. This directly links with Anti-Bullying that will be happening next week.
03/11/23 Doves have had a fabulous 1st week back after half term. Within our writing lessons, we have started to explore our new power of reading text the Iron Man. So far the children have really enjoyed reading this text. Next week we will be writing our own poems in the style of Brenda Williams about Chapter 1 - The coming of Iron Man. Within Science, we started our new topic of 'Electricity'. We started by thinking about what we already know and what we'd like to know next. I was blown away by the children's prop knowledge and looking forward to developing our learning further within this topic. Have a lovely weekend everyone!
20/10/23 Doves have had a super week to end our first half term. On Tuesday, the children thoroughly enjoyed their reptile workshop, where we were joined by reptiles and fluffy animals from Bedfont Lakes. I was blown away with their inquisitive questions and how carefully they held the animals. In Maths, we have started our new unit Addition and Subtraction. Within this, we have been learning to add two 4 digit numbers. We explored part part wholes, bar models and place value charts to do this. Next half term, I ask excited to begin our new topic of Extreme Earth and begin to explore earthquakes and volcanoes. 13/10/23 Doves have had another super week! In Science, we have been working hard to understand classification keys and using them to classify animals/plants on their characteristics. We are looking forward to applying this learning in our workshop next week! In Maths, we have been learning about negative numbers and discussing where we may see them in everyday life. I was amazed by the children's skill on identifying these numbers and using this knowledge to compare/order negative numbers. Well done Year 4, have a lovely, restful weekend!
06/10/23 It's been another exciting week in Doves class. The children have been challenged in maths this week as we have been exploring rounding numbers to the nearest 10,100 and 1,000. Within our writing lessons, we continued to learn about fronted adverbials and were practising to use these by summarising different parts of our Power of Reading text 'Mouse Bird Snake Wolf'. Next week, we are looking forward to learning about negative numbers in maths and finding about how they are used in real life.
29/09/23 Doves have had a busy week I am so proud of each of them. Within our writing lessons, we have been exploring 'Non- Chronological Reports' and the children researched their own information about their chosen animal. We have been practising using fronted adverbials and the children have made an excellent start with this. Within our PSHE lessons, we have been thinking about democracy and the rights we have as individuals - the children shared some great reflections on this. Next week, we will be starting to use negative numbers within our Maths lessons and identifying them on a number line. In our PE lessons, we are going to continue embedding the skills needed for TAG rugby.
22/09/23 Doves have had another fabulous week I have been blown away by the children's hard work and determination to succeed this week - they should all be very proud of themselves. In writing, children have been describing their own creation using lots of different writing techniques, such as, alliteration, similes and metaphors. This piece of writing was incredible and I am excited for the children to share this with you all next week at the Open Event. I am excited for the week ahead as we begin to explore our Science topic further and learning about classification keys.
15/09/23 What a fabulous we've had in Year 4 this week. The children have been excellent mathematicians as they have explore 4-digit numbers and using manipulative represent these. Also, we've been particularly looking at true/false looking at how we can justify our reasoning. Yesterday, I was so proud of the children as they completed their 1st swimming lesson at school. This was very exciting and the children represented out school beautifully. Next week, we will deepening our knowledge about animals and their grouping by learning about different we can group them based on their characteristics. Have a lovely weekend everyone.
08/09/23 Welcome back everyone! Doves have had a fantastic week settling into their new Year 4 classroom and establishing new routines. We have started working hard on the recall of our timetables and the children have impressed us on their determination to learn these. Within our Geography lessons this week, we began our topic 'Our Wondrous World', the children were able to think back to prior knowledge and think about what else they'd like to learn. Next week on Thursday, we are excited to begin our swimming lessons and finding out more about how these are going to work I am excited to explore deeper and find out more about the world of the mighty gods!
