Teaching & Learning Weekly Summary

Below you will find our weekly teaching and learning summary to find out how we develop and enrich your child's teaching and learning whilst they are with us.

Week ending

What we have been learning about

23/10/25 This week in Year 4 we have been taking our learning into the community! On Wednesday we read Ava's story - the story of a migratory bird who misses her family leaving the nest. Thursday we went to the WWT Weland centre in Barnes where we met Ava in person and learned about the different species in our local area and the ways in which they are suited to their habitats. In history this week we have been working on a special project explloring the topic of the Empire Windrush for Black History Month. We have learned about the journey that the ship took to get to Tilbury, the people on board, the challenges that they faced, and the ways in which people from the Caribbean contributed to British society in the 1960s and beyond. We wish everyone a safe and restful half term break and we can't wait to see what's next for  Autumn 2!
17/10/25 This week in Year 4 we have been developping our investigatve journalism skills! We have written a newspaper report on the events from our Power of Reading Text Mouse Bird Snake Wolf and used our drama skills to conduct interviews with local witnesses including the Mayor. In science this week we took a look at the impact that pollution has no the animals living in a n enviornment and the ways in which we can help them to adapt to sudden, man-made changes to the world around them. In geography we began to write a non-chronological report based on our research into the Tundra biome and in music we continued to explore the greatest hits from ABBA. We can't wait for our trip next Thursday to the Barnes Wetland Centre!
10/10/25 This week in Year 4 we have been doing our research! In geography, we researched the Tundra Biome and have been exploring all of the ways that the Tundra is a unique place. In Science, we took things a step further and explored the endangered species which live in every type of Biome. From Polar Bears to Mountain Gorillas, we have explored the ways in which climate change and human interference have caused these species to come under threat. In writing we have been working on a formal decree from the gods. We have been practising using our most formal language to write in role and requesting that the humans cease and desist their interference with the environment.
3/10/25 This week in year 4 we have been leaning into the autumn weather and learning about leaves! As part of our unit of Science we have been learning about the different types of leaves and their functions, then classifying them by shape and size. We have read more of our power of reading text Mouse Bird Snake Wolf and are writing a diary entry from the perspective of Little Ben. When making your own animals, what could possibly go wrong? Finally in music we have continued our exploration of song through ABBA's hit Mamma Mia. We can't wait to see what happens next week!
26/9/25 This week in Year 4 we have been creating our own creatures! Drawing on inspiration from our power of reading text, we have been mixing together attributes from different animals to create a new animal. We then wrote an entry to be included in the Encyclopaedia Brittanica about the attributes of these cool new creatures. In Science, we set out to answer the very important question: Does it have a spine? We learnt about vertebrates and invertebrates and then began to classify some animals and insects into each category. In Geography we learnt about climate zones and identified that we live in a temperate climate zone, not too hot, not too cold and lots and lots of rain. We can't wait to see what we get up to next week!
19/9/25 This week in Year 4 we have been learning all about Mice as part of our Power of Reading text Mouse Bird Snake Wolf. We have explored the adaptations that mice have which make them well-suited to their environments and how that makes them special. In Science this week, we have been exploring what the characteristics of living things are and how we can identify different living creatures based on what they have in common and what is different about them. To round off our exploration of living things, we have also been exploring habitats and how they differ globally. This has helped us to consider how the environment might impact the animals that live there! In maths we got the dienes out and worked on our partitioning skills, and in PE we are working on our tagging skills for Tag Rugby.
12/9/25 Year 4 have had a wonderful first full week back at school! We have been learning about superlatives to help us create the most amazing piece of writing based on our power of reading text Mouse Bird Snake Wolf. In maths we have started to learn about Place value and the importance of the number 0 as a placeholder. In Science this week we wondered what changes that human beings make to the world around them and the impact that this may have on animals and their habitats and in PSHE we discussed being part of a school community and identified all of the adults around us who help us at school!
