English as an Additional Language (EAL)

English as an Additional LanguageA poster saying everyone matters

We are delighted that our school community reflects a rich cultural diversity, with children and families who speak many different languages alongside English. We value this diversity and see the range of languages, cultures and experiences within our school as a strength that enriches our whole-school community.

We provide a language-rich environment where children are encouraged to develop their vocabulary, communication skills and confidence in using English across all areas of the curriculum. Our teaching is carefully adapted to support children who are learning English as an additional language, with visual resources, modelling, repetition, contextualised learning and opportunities for purposeful talk embedded throughout the school day.

Children's language development is supported through our Ordinarily Available Provision (OAP), with additional targeted interventions provided where appropriate and based on individual need. Where further support is required, we work closely with families and relevant professionals to identify appropriate strategies and ensure that children are able to access the curriculum, develop their English language skills and make good progress.

We recognise that being bilingual or multilingual is an asset, and we encourage children to maintain and celebrate their home languages while developing confidence and fluency in English.
