Year 5 have had a sensationally busy and brilliant week! In maths, the children have been tackling addition with massive numbers up to 100,000 , while in writing they stepped into the spotlight for some high-energy drama, debating the pros and cons of Liam (and Florida!) taking off for China in our text Cosmic. Taking our learning outdoors, the children enjoyed modeling the solar system to discover how planets orbit the Sun and how long those celestial journeys take, and in history we mapped out ancient mysteries by locating exactly where the civilization of Sumer once stood. This week, in Year 5, we have tackled several exciting milestones across the curriculum: in mathematics. The children mastered rounding numbers from the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000 all the way up to one million, while science lessons took them on a captivating journey exploring the composition of the planets in our solar system. During PSHE, they engaged in thoughtful discussions setting clear goals for their personal learning journeys. In English, the class produced exceptional writing, crafting heartfelt informal letters from the perspective of Liam’s overwhelmed father in Cosmic as he grapples with his son's chaotic adventures. Year 5 have had a wonderfully busy week, highlighted by a visit from the Surrey Fire Brigade for an essential fire safety talk, where the officer were incredibly impressed by the children's exemplary participation and listening skills. In maths, we have been sharpening their place value skills by partitioning numbers up to 1,000,000 and accurately calculating intervals on number lines. In writing, inspired by our class text Cosmic, the children crafted vivid character profiles of Liam before carefully editing, improving, and publishing their work for our classroom display. Finally, in science, we explored our solar system by creating brilliant mnemonics to help us remember the correct order of the planets. Have a lovely, relaxing weekend! |

Year 5 have had a brilliant week of learning! In English, they are really enjoying our story Cosmic and have been developing their understanding of the main character, Liam, through hot-seating. They then wrote in role as Liam, using expanded noun phrases to add detail and make their writing more descriptive and engaging. In Maths, we have used Tagtiv8 to practise converting Roman numerals and have learnt how to read, write and order numbers up to one million. In History, we have begun our exciting new topic on Ancient Sumer, exploring this fascinating civilisation. In PE, we enjoyed sharing and demonstrating our football skills, while developing our ability to stop and control the ball whilst changing direction. Welcome back, everyone – what a fantastic start to Year 5! The children have settled in brilliantly and are showing a wonderful enthusiasm for learning. We’ve already hit the ground running in maths by diving into Roman numerals, while in English, we’ve been researching Frank Cottrell-Boyce, the author of our exciting new class text, Cosmic, and making some thoughtful predictions about the story. Outside the classroom, the children put their communication and collaboration to the test with team-building activities designed to help them work together efficiently.
