Calculation Strategies

Supporting your child with calculation strategies can be challenging as some methods taught today are different to those that were previously taught in schools. Click on the links below for an explanation of the different calculation strategies the children are taught to use.

What is Mental Maths?

Mental maths refers to the rapid recall of number facts, for example, knowing your times tables off by heart or knowing without having to work it out, that 4 and 6 will make 10.  It is a vital skill that once learnt, your children will be able to use for the rest of their lives.

Here are some examples of mental maths.

Number Fact Examples
Number bond to 10 3 + 7 = 10
4 + 6 = 10
Subtraction fact from 10 10 – 4 = 6
10 – 7 = 3
Number bond to 20 17 + 3 = 20
11+ 9 = 20
Counting in steps of 5 Reciting 5, 10, 15, 20, 25
Times tables 7 × 10 = 70
3 × 5 = 15

Top Tips for Mental Maths Practice
Mental Maths can be practised anywhere, chant or sing your number bonds to 10 or your times tables on the bus, walking to the park, etc. There are loads of great songs on YouTube (always remember to check the content first and supervise your child when using YouTube).

If your child is a visual learner, try enlarging and displaying the mental maths they are working on around their bedroom, on the fridge or even round the bath!  If they find them challenging, try focusing on just a few at a time until they know them, then introduce more.
