Our Statement of intent:
At Darley Dene, Religious Education enables pupils to develop an informed understanding of the diverse beliefs and worldviews that shape society locally, nationally, and globally. The RE curriculum aims to support pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, as well as fostering religious literacy and critical thinking skills. Our intent is to prepare students to live respectfully and responsibly in our community.
Curriculum
Our curriculum ensures that: pupils gain secure knowledge and understanding of the principal religions represented in Britain today; students explore beliefs, practices, values and traditions and how these influence individuals and communities; students learn to respect difference, challenge stereotypes and engage thoughtfully with ideas they may not share; and make connections between religion, beliefs and contemporary life.
Implementation
RE is taught in accordance with guidance from the Guildford Diocesan Board of Education (GDBE) as well as the Surrey Agreed Syllabus and reflects a balanced study of Christianity, other major world religions, and non-religious world views. Teachers have access to resources and planning from these organisations to help them create and deliver Religious Education lessons which ensure that relevant expectations are met across the school. The RE curriculum is inclusive and sequenced to build progressively deeper understanding, ensuring all pupils can access and succeed. Each year group teaches one hour of Religious Education Weekly and records their learning in their class RE book. Individual lessons include structured opportunities for discussion, debate, reflection and respectful dialogue, and the wider curriculum provides planned opportunities to encounter lived religion, such as visitors, visits to places of worship, and virtual encounters.
Impact
As a result of the RE curriculum, pupils at Darley Dene gain the tools they need in order to display respect, empathy and tolerance toward others while contributing positively to the school community. We aim for all the chidlren at Darley Dene to engage respectfully with difference. We also recognise that by representing and celebrating all faiths, we are able to support and value all members of our school community. In our accepting, open and diverse learning environment, children feel supported and confident to engage in open discussions and deepen their understanding.
